Hi! My name is Tobias (or Toby), and I am a PhD candidate in Philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin. Before coming to UT, I studied Philosophy and Music at UC Berkeley.
My primary research interests lie at the intersection of the philosophy of mind and mind-brain sciences (such as psychology, neuroscience, and cognitive science). At the moment, I am especially interested in the structure of the mind and cognitive ontology. More specifically, I am working on problems that arise when we attempt to scientifically investigate the emotions (such as whether emotion categories are natural cognitive kinds) and how answers to these questions change the prospects of a complete science of the emotions.
I also have a side interest in the various characterizations of mental faculties in early modern philosophy. Currently, I am specifically interested in Margaret Cavendish's views of mental faculties. My latest paper, published in the British Journal for the History of Philosophy, discusses her conception of memory and remembrance.
Here is my CV.
