Hi! My name is Tobias (or Toby), and I am a PhD candidate in Philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin. Before coming to UT, I studied Philosophy and Music at UC Berkeley.
My primary research interests lie at the intersection of the philosophy of mind and philosophy of science. More particularly, I am interested in scientific (and therefore non-scientific) classification and taxonomy in the mind-brain sciences. I am currently working on classification in emotion science (such as whether folk emotion concepts identify natural cognitive kinds) and how answers to these questions change the prospects of a complete science of the emotions.
I also have a side interest in the various characterizations of mental faculties in early modern philosophy. Currently, I am specifically interested in Margaret Cavendish's views of mental faculties. My latest paper, published in the British Journal for the History of Philosophy, discusses her conception of memory and remembrance. I am additionally working on projects having to do with Cavendish's account of natural vs. artificial kinds.
Here is my CV.
